Math Facts: These are so important to mathematical achievement!
Being fluent in math computation is extremely helpful to success in math in all grades, and in life. But it doesn't have to be "drill and kill" all the time. The key is regular practice, which could mean keeping flash cards or worksheets in the car to practice, or maybe using computer programs, websites, or apps for practice a few minutes each day.
A BIG key to math fact success is having an adult to help with encouragement and practice!

5th Grade Recommendations/Benchmarks
One of the biggest keys to mathematical success is the ability to quickly recall basic math facts! As students progress to more complex mathematical concepts, it becomes increasingly more and more important for them to automatically recall basic math facts. This allows them to concentrate on the more difficult concepts. To help establish math fact automaticity, 5th graders will be given timed math fact tests weekly/biweekly throughout the year. Each test has a 6 minute time limit.
If your child meets the expectations listed below (passing each algorithm two times), they will be considered a math fact master. Students who are successful at the computation tests below will move onto mixed algorithms and equation practice. While your child does practice math facts at school, it is not usually enough time to master this skill. Your child should also be practicing their math facts at home each night.
Addition: 100 out of 100 in 6 minutes
Subtractions: 100 out of 100 in 6 minutes
Multiplication: 100 out of 100 in 6 minutes
Division: 80 out of 100 in 6 minutes
